Tibet Road

 The old Hindustan -Tibet road , which I traaversed last month, was built in the 19th century. It is built on the ancient silk route from China. It also featured in the History Channel's 'Deadliest Roads of the World' series. Although it seems sccary, the scenery all round makes you forget the danger.
I did a ten kilometer walk  much further on this road, from a ssmall Himalayan hamlet called Rakcham to the Buddhist village Chitkul, which is at the border of India and Tibet.

These are some of the mountain flowers on the wayside. The photo below of the Himalayan peaks is taken on the way to Tibet , which lies beyond.

Konkan Beauty

These wayside flowers along the sea coast in Kokan attract butterflies in hoards. Since I am still without a computer, I could not find out their botanical name.

Along the River Baspa

The snow capped Himalayan ranges were so grand ! The ice cold rapids of the river , and the friendly inhabitants of Kinnaur made our holiday a truly memorable one.

Monkey Brush

Came back home after a lovely holiday at the seasidde in the Konkan coast , and another holiday in the cold heights of the Greater Himalayas, only to find my computer irrevocably kaput: Ne computer costs a lot!!

L for the Lunar New Year

Last Monday was the Hindu Lunar New Year. It is a joyous ocasion when families get together and have fun and a feast. Before we start eating, we eat a mixture of Neem flower and jaggery. Neem flowers are bitter and jaggery is sweet. The mixture signifies the year ahead, which will have sweet as well as bitter moments. So, with a prayer to the Supreme Power to give us the strength to bear both the bitter and the sweet with equanimity, we start on the food.
The Hindu Lunar calender is based on the phases of the moon. Every month starts on the day after the new moon.The first day of the year is in spring. The years have names- they come in a cycle of 60years. This year is called Jaya , or Victory, which is significant because of the impending elections !

K for King

The kite is the king of all he surveys. He is the knight in shining armour to his wife, whom he never deserts, but he is a killjoy to other predators.

 The King's palace in Mysore houses a golden throne where the Maharaja used to sit in Durbar. But now the last surviving king is dead, and the palace has a forlorn look.
