The Avocado Way to Health

Although the avocado is from South America, it has naturalized itself here , in south India. It is known as butterfruit here. The Aztecs considered it a fertility fruit. The avocado trees in the neighbourhood are now full of fruit. They don't ripen on the tree, but have to be plucked when mature, and ripened in the house.
Avocado lowers the LDL(bad) cholesterol, and triglyceride levels and increases the HDL (good) cholesterol levels. It has lots of potassium and vitamins, and fat.
In India, it is made into nutritious milk shakes.
An interesting thing about avocado is that squirrels don't attack it. Maybe, because it is mildly toxic to smaller animals.

  1. You know what, I'm really not sure if I've ever tried Avocado before. I see them all the time in the supermarkets but I just never bought one.

  2. Try it Barry. It is great as a dip, and as a sandwitch spread. My favourite dish is to add sour curds to mashed avocado, and a dash of green chilli paste and salt.Good with chappati.

  3. oooh Lotusleaf my favorite. My tree has small ones and will be ready around September. I love it in a sandwich or salad or I make a mayo with it to go with fish or any meat. My tree produces a medium sized fruit that tastes like butter.

  4. I've only tasted it once! But it wasn't ripe enough! We don't get them here. Wonderful to see them in your garden.
