Floral Friday- Couroupita

Couroupita or the Cannon-ball tree is a native of India . The tree is huge, and the flowers have a curious shape and an overpowering scent. This tree is associated with the penance of Buddha, and is sacred to the Buddhists and the Hindus. The fruits are round, and look like cannon balls, giving the tree its colloquial name.
Many parts of the tree are used in Ayurvedic medicine.
My thanks to Nick for hosting the meme Floral Friday.

  6. It really is just the most fascinating tree. I've only ever seen it once, at a Botanic Garden further south. It was simply amazing.

  8. The cannon ball that is seen partially in the picture is so huge! A friend once told me that the cannon ball is edible and quite tasty but for the innumerable prickly seeds that hurt your tongue!

  9. Goodness, that is so unusual. I never saw the tree during my four months in India but, for the most part, I wasn't in the countryside. I would really like to see it.

  10. Pretty! There are only two cannon ball trees in our city. I did take several pictures at the botanical garden in Chennai but somehow never got around to posting them.
