My World- Jackfruit

Jackfrut has started making an appearance on the roadside fruitstalls now. They attract the passerby with their strong fruity smell and their golden colour. Each jackfruit on this man's cart is at least 7 kilos. You can buy the whole fruit, or just some sections. You can dip a piece in honey and eat it. Although jackfruit grows everywhere in India, it is only in the south that you get the fruit variety. Everywhere else, it is used as a vegetable to make curries, pickles and pulavs. My thanks to Sylvia, Klaus, Wren, Sandy and the Fishing Guy for hosting My World. 1. My goodness, it is huge. I take it the smell is not unpleasant, like durian, which I have tasted but don't like very much. I do like most other tropical fruits I've had. My all time favorite is the mangosteen. I'm not sure it is grown in India. I had it in Bangkok and its luscious white sections are most delectable. It is totally different from the mango.

I've only eaten canned jackfruit here in San Francisco.

  2. Mmmm I do like jackfruit, and I find it already very sweet, as with most tropical fruits. When they cook it as a vegetable is the fruit a very different variety or do they just use it green?

  5. Must confess that it doesn't look very appetizing to me :-)
What does it taste like and what does it look like on the tree?

  6. My favourite fruit too! Here we also have people selling them on the roadside. The young fruit can be cooked as curry with meat or prawns or squids or blanched to make local spicy salad.

  7. Jack fruit are so delicious. You are so lucky to be able to grow them or buy them in quantities like this. I love the fruit variety, as I do not eat much starchy stuff.

  12. I love jackfruit. We never let any part of it go waste. Maybe just the outer skin. But some people have use for that too.
