Cherries at Chitkul

 Chitkul is a village in the Himalayas, at the China border. Most of the inhabitants of this remote mountain village are Buddhists. The houses are wooden, with slate roofs. Newer houses have cement roofs.

 The walk to Chitkul takes you through misty mountains.

 Cherries are cheap here...

The wild cherry trees were in full bloom in May.

Walking in the Himalayas

 A walk in the Himalayas is a wonderful experience, in spite of the huffing and puffing lowland folks like me do!

We walked from Rackcham to te Buddhist village of Chitkul at 11,000feet.Wild cherry trees were full of bright pink blossom. The snow capped mountains, the ice cold gurgling river, the bracing air, the butterflies and wild flowers filled my heart with joy.

A for Apple Blossom

It was apple blossom season in Kalpa in May. Everywhere we went, we came across apple trees laden with beautiful blossoms.

 In August, the delicious Kinnaur apples will start coming to the market...

Our World -Recycling

In India, everything is recycled. Our newspapers and magazines are recycled, cotton clothes are recycled, glass bottles are recycled... the list is endless. The recycling begins with a humble individual known as the 'kabadiwalla', who collects our discarded things and pays for them.

The Kabdiwalla is honoured in this sculpture made of broken pieces of china. It is given the pride of place in the Mall Road in Shimla.

Ylang-ylang for Y

The scent of ylang-ylang flowers is fruity and mild. The flowers are a greenish yellow. The vine can be pruned to make it into a bush .For some reason, the ylang-ylang has lost its allure for  the local gardeners. I could only get a plant from Daboli in Maharashtra
