This is the Pandan I use sometimes to flovour the rice. Although it looks like a lily, it belongs to the Pandanaceae family. It is growing in semi shade, and has never flowered in six years. The leaves have a nutty, grassy aroma , similar to the aroma of Basmati rice. It is called the Basmati Pandan locally.
Pandanus amaryllifolius is used extensively in Indonesian , Malaysian and Thai cooking. The leaves of this plant have a cockroach repllant quality!
I am still looking for this plant and have not been too lucky. I read recently that it can be grown near the edge of a pond and it thrives there.
ReplyDeleteThis is a plant I would love to be able to grow. Sometimes you can buy a bundle of leaves at the market but home grown is best. It is on my wish list
ReplyDeleteHelen, I hope you will find a plant soon.I'll plant a little plant near the pond.
ReplyDeleteIan, I am sure you will be able to grow it in your garden.
Lovely. We do add a turmeric leaf to a rice preparation with coconut milk. And it has a divine flavour.
ReplyDeleteI want to find this plant for my upcoming edible thai garden and have seen reports that it will make it in 9a. I would love to use this to flavor my cooking.
